What You Gain
Skills and momentum that move you forward faster, even if automotive isn’t your long-term path.
-
AutoSTART helps you build job-ready skills early, so you can move toward paid work and career opportunities sooner — without wasting time figuring things out later.
-
Hands-on experience with modern automotive systems, tools, and environments — plus the confidence that comes from applying what you learn in real situations.
-
You’ll earn an Automotive Industry Career-Readiness Certificate and academic credit that supports your path — not one that keeps you stuck in classrooms.
-
Whether you move into the workforce, apply to the Hawaii Youth Auto Technician Apprenticeship (YATA), or continue to community college, AutoSTART puts you ahead of where you’d be otherwise.
There’s More than One Outcome
Different roles. Same goal: helping students get real exposure.
How Do I Start?
-
If you’re curious about automotive but don’t want to commit to one job or degree yet, AutoSTART is for you.
If you want to do something — not just talk about it — this program puts you in real automotive environments, exposes you to modern careers, and gives you the chance to figure out what you’re actually good at, without locking yourself into a long-term plan.
No experience required. Just interest, effort, and a willingness to try something new. Think of it as a test drive — not a lifetime commitment.
-
AutoSTART is a supervised, no-cost program delivered in partnership with Honolulu Community College, HIDOE, and automotive industry employers. Students learn in a structured environment that balances academics, hands-on instruction, and real-world career exposure.
The program emphasizes safety, accountability, and skill-building — not just interest or curiosity.
-
These pathways are designed to support both student interests and real workforce needs — and counselor involvement is essential to making them accessible.
We ask counselors to help identify students who may benefit from hands-on, technical learning and actively support them through the application process. Your guidance helps students see AutoSTART as a legitimate, high-value option and ensures they have the encouragement and approvals needed to apply.
If you’d like more information or materials to share with students and families, please reach out.
-
AutoSTART and YATA are built in partnership with industry — and employer involvement makes these pathways real.
We welcome employers interested in supporting student learning through site visits, job shadowing, mentorship, or future apprenticeship opportunities. Your participation helps students understand what modern automotive careers actually look like — and helps build the next generation of skilled talent.
