How Do I Start?
Different roles. Same goal: helping students get real exposure.
01
I’m a student
If you’re curious about automotive but don’t want to commit to one job or degree yet, AutoSTART is for you.
If you want to do something — not just talk about it — this program puts you in real automotive environments, exposes you to modern careers, and gives you the chance to figure out what you’re actually good at, without locking yourself into a long-term plan.
No experience required. Just interest, effort, and a willingness to try something new. Think of it as a test drive — not a lifetime commitment.
02
I’m a parent or guardian
AutoSTART is a supervised, no-cost program delivered in partnership with Honolulu Community College, HIDOE, and automotive industry employers. Students learn in a structured environment that balances academics, hands-on instruction, and real-world career exposure.
The program emphasizes safety, accountability, and skill-building — not just interest or curiosity.
03
I’m a counselor
These pathways are designed to support both student interests and real workforce needs — and counselor involvement is essential to making them accessible.
We ask counselors to help identify students who may benefit from hands-on, technical learning and actively support them through the application process.
If you’d like more information or materials to share with students and families, please reach out.
04
I’m an employer
AutoSTART and YATA are built in partnership with industry — and employer involvement makes these pathways real.
We welcome employers interested in supporting student learning through site visits, job shadowing, mentorship, or future apprenticeship opportunities.

02 Is this only for future technicians — and does it cost anything?
No. AutoSTART supports a wide range of automotive careers — including service, parts, logistics, fleet operations, and management — and there is no cost to participate. Tuition, books, and supplies are provided.
03 Where do I go after AutoSTART?
It’s up to you. AutoSTART opens multiple opportunities. Students interested in becoming auto technicians will have an advantage when applying to YATA, and those pursuing Honolulu Community College’s Automotive Technology program will already have completed one requirement.
